5 Christmas Market City Breaks You Can Reach with Eurowings from the UK

Christmas market city breaks are one of the easiest ways to fit a proper festive trip into a long weekend, and Germany and Austria have some of the best-known markets on the continent. I went through Eurowings‘s official route and booking pages to see which UK airports actually connect to which market cities this winter, rather than assuming every pretty market photo online means a convenient flight.

1. Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf’s Christmas market runs across seven themed areas between the Altstadt, the Rhine and the Königsallee, with an ice rink and a Ferris wheel. According to Visit Düsseldorf, the 2026 market runs 19 November to 30 December, closed on 22 November and Christmas Day. Eurowings operates non-stop flights from London Heathrow and separately from Manchester, giving this city break the widest choice of UK departure points on this list.
Why it made the list: the most UK departure options of any city here, so it is easiest to fit around a specific weekend.
Honest drawback: the exact Heathrow “from” fare was not shown on the page I could access, so treat any price you see as [VERIFY PRICE] until you check the live calendar.

2. Cologne

Cologne spreads its Christmas markets across the city, with the market at the Cathedral best known. Köln Tourismus lists the 2026 Cathedral market from 16 November to 23 December, closed 22 November, free entry. Eurowings launched a new non-stop route from London Gatwick in spring 2026, flying 13 times a week, its only UK connection to the city.
Why it made the list: a brand new direct Gatwick route means less time spent changing flights for a short break.
Honest drawback: because the route is new, the official “from” price was not confirmed on the page I could access, so check the live fare before you commit to dates. [VERIFY PRICE]

3. Stuttgart

Stuttgart’s market, which the organisers trace back to 1692, spreads roughly 250 stalls across Schlossplatz, Schillerplatz, Karlsplatz and Marktplatz. The official Stuttgart Christmas Market site confirms 2026 dates of 25 November to 23 December, open 11am to 9pm Sunday to Thursday and until 10pm on Friday and Saturday. Eurowings also launched a new non-stop route here from London Gatwick in spring 2026, flying six times a week, and its official fare page shows flights advertised from £64.99 one way.
Why it made the list: a confirmed “from” price makes it easier to budget this one in advance.
Honest drawback: £64.99 is the lowest fare shown across the calendar, for a specific month, not necessarily the date you want to travel.

4. Hamburg

Hamburg runs more than thirty Christmas markets across the city, and its best known, the Rathausmarkt market in front of the historic town hall, runs from 23 November to 23 December 2026 according to Hamburg Tourism, with free admission and daily opening from 11am to 9pm. Eurowings‘ official booking page confirms a route from Birmingham to Hamburg, operating around twice a week, with a lowest fare shown of £114.99 one way.
Why it made the list: it is the only Hamburg route from the UK I could confirm directly on Eurowings‘ own site, so it is worth knowing it exists at all.
Honest drawback: twice-weekly flights mean your travel dates are fixed around the schedule, not the other way round.

5. Salzburg

Salzburg’s Christkindlmarkt sits between the cathedral and the Residenz palace, with around 100 stalls and free admission. According to the official Salzburg Christkindlmarkt site, the 2026 market runs from 19 November to 1 January, with regular hours from 10am and adjusted hours on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. I could not confirm a non-stop Eurowings route from a UK airport to Salzburg on the airline’s own booking pages, so I am marking this one clearly: [VERIFY ROUTE]. Third-party booking sites suggest Eurowings sells connecting itineraries to Salzburg with a change of aircraft, most likely through a German hub, rather than flying there directly from the UK.
Why it made the list: Salzburg is one of the prettiest markets on this list, and it is still bookable through Eurowings as a connecting itinerary.
Honest drawback: a connection adds journey time and risk of a missed onward flight, so it suits travellers with flexible plans more than a tight weekend.

Good to know about Eurowings fares and baggage

Eurowings sells three main fare types on its own site: BASIC, SMART and BIZclass. On the BASIC fare, only a small underseat bag is included, a larger cabin bag is an add-on from around €18, and checked baggage starts from around €17 when added online in advance. The SMART fare includes one checked bag and a larger cabin bag as standard, along with free seat reservation. BIZclass adds a second checked bag up to 32kg and two large cabin bags. These figures come from Eurowings’ official fares and baggage pages.

Honest drawbacks before you book

A Christmas market city break on a budget airline fare comes with trade-offs. Baggage fees on a BASIC fare add up quickly if you forget to book them in advance, since adding a checked bag at the airport costs more than adding it online. UK departures to some of these cities, Cologne and Stuttgart especially, are new or limited to one or two flights a week, which narrows your choice of travel dates. Winter weather across Germany and Austria can also delay or cancel flights in December, so it is worth checking Eurowings‘ own disruption policy before booking non-refundable hotels or market tickets around a tight schedule.

Takeaway

Of these five Christmas market city breaks, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Stuttgart and Hamburg all have a Eurowings route from the UK that I could confirm directly on the airline’s own site, while Salzburg currently needs a connection. Checking the live route map and fare calendar before booking is still worth doing, since schedules and prices change by the week.

Good to know

Price range: fares shown on Eurowings‘ own site started from around £64.99 one way on the Stuttgart route and £114.99 on the Hamburg route at the time of writing; other routes should be checked individually.

Where to book: directly through Eurowings.

Baggage and changes: covered under Eurowings‘ own fares and baggage pages; prices and routes may change.
